Maemo DIABLO SDK install on ubuntu 8.04

I am not going through the full install but only through the problems

Before install
edit /etc/sysctl.conf and add below

'vm.vdso_enabled = 0
vm.mmap_min_addr = 4096'

now run 'sysctl -p' as root

start the maemo-scratchbox-install_4.1.sh

Once the install is successful you will get the below term output

==============================

Installation was successful!
----------------------------

You now have Scratchbox 1.0.8 'apophis' release installed.

Scratchbox cannot be run as user root. Instead, use your normal login
user account. Add additional scratchbox users and sandboxes with the
following command (outside scratchbox with root permissions):

# /scratchbox/sbin/sbox_adduser USER yes

Running this command will create sandbox environment for that user and
add user to the 'sbox' scratchbox user group.
You will need to start a new login terminal after being added to the
'sbox' group for group membership to be effective.

Login to scratchbox session using the following command (as user):

$ /scratchbox/login

==============================

Now add the user :

sudo /scratchbox/sbin/sbox_adduser username yes

close the terminal, start new terminal, issue "sudo chmod -R +rx /scratchbox" and " chmod +s /scrachbox/sbin"

some times you need a restart ( better to restart ). In my case i went to another problem ( solution was " chmod 777 /tmp" ).

Now back and run "bash maemo-sdk-install_4.1.sh"
If things go good, You will see a "Happy hacking! " message at the end.

busybox_R2.1.1.tgz (720 KB)

LGPL

hhl-target-glibc-2.2.3-n12.5.src.rpm (19 MB)

Disabling port protection for ports below 1024

Try running a program which binds to ports less than 1024 as non root user. The possible thing you are going to say back is you need to be root to do so.

Its just a belief.

Issue the below command depending on your operating system and try again ( issue as root )

freebsd :

sysctl net.inet.ip.portrange.reservedhigh=0

Solaris:

/usr/sbin/usermod -K defaultpriv=basic,net_privaddr

now execute the program which binds to ports below 1024, run as normal user - and check :-). The above command take off the reservations on the ports below 1024.

Yet another "all non core stuff be Open source" example from Cisco (AXP)

The new mantra "all non core stuff be Open source" is working faster or gaining more importance. This gives a "Green Image" to the company ( we are not against open source message - lets coin its as Green image ) + advantage of open source.

Cisco is the last in the game with Cisco AXP

from FAQ :

Q. What does AXP stand for?
A. Application eXtension Platform.

Q. What is AXP?
A. AXP is a Linux blade that runs in the Cisco integrated services router and allows third-party applications to be tightly integrated with the router using APIs. AXP provides an application hosting infrastructure that affords Cisco integrated services router customers the opportunity to run all or portions of their branch applications on an integrated services router service module. The AXP will also be available to commercial application vendors and customers as a new platform capable of running their applications inside of an integrated services router, rather than on a traditional standalone server. AXP provides a powerful platform to create complete solutions with the integrated services router.

Q. Can anyone develop an application and install it on AXP?
A. Developers need to engage through the AXP Development Partner Program.

Q. Are any prepackaged application solutions available for sale?
A. The AXP go to market includes both platform sales (AXP sold as open platform) as well as solution sales (AXP sold as part of larger solution ecosystem). Cisco is building solution practices around primary markets such as payment systems, workforce management, and unified communications. Most of these solution sales will be reference sells, whereas a small number of them will be sold with third-party applications on the Cisco price list. In any case, there a number of prepackaged, validated solutions will be cultivated and marketed as part of the overall AXP go to market.

Q. What operating systems can run on AXP?
A. Today, Linux is the only supported OS

HTC names Google phone 'Dream'

The mobile phone High Tech Computer (HTC) has been developing to run on the Android software from Google will be called "Dream," and it will have a large touchscreen and full QWERTY keypad, a person close to the situation said Thursday.

HTC may become the first handset maker in the world to put out a mobile phone developed around Android, but it faces stiff competition from Samsung, a separate source said. Samsung has stepped up its effort to put out a Google phone, the person said.

HTC's Google handset is just over 5 inches long and 3 inches wide, with a keypad underneath the screen that either slides out or swivels out. The aim of the keypad is for easy e-mail, note-taking, and writing Web addresses. Internet navigational controls are situated below the screen on the handset.

The handset will likely hit the market near the end of this year, the person said.

The company officially remained mum on the handset. "We cannot comment on this product," said Maggie Cheng, an HTC representative.

Last November, HTC became the first company to admit to developing a mobile phone based on Android, although Samsung, Motorola, and other handset developers are part of the group dedicated to furthering the software, the Open Handset Alliance.

Android, an open source software platform that includes an OS, is designed to take advantage of Internet services for mobility. The software could become a potent new rival to Windows Mobile and other handset operating systems. At the launch ceremony, Google announced that over 30 companies had joined the Open Handset Alliance.

Nokia and Google - The next Team

Why ? Read headlines "Nokia and Google to Offer Google Search to Nokia Customers Worldwide". I know what you are going to ask - " You read about Google's Android vs Nokia " So do they compete ?

I believe most people may think so but look close :

Nokia took Trolltech ( the home of QT and KDE ). Google is a customer of QT. now Google is a customer of Nokia.

Second : Google's core is search and not Linux or Android.
Nokia's core is handsets not Maemo.

Android is only a platform for Google to reach Mobile.
Maemo is a platform for handset.
Once Nokia helps Google for more reach then why struggle with Android or Maemo ?

The new strategy is "all non core stuff be Open source".

WOW now, we have Android = Maemo = Linux.
Google happy because search reach, Nokia Happy because they can sell more handsets and

Linux - Android or Maemo does this make difference ? its all Linux man (not core stuff for their revenue stream - look at strategy ).

So expect now more with Nokia Google Team !!

Upgrading N800 with Os2008

Was a nice experience. The first thing was to read the cnet news article on this

Second step: downloading the os2008 image as per instructions 1,2 and 3 from the article. My little Einstein asked: why not try directly from windows. kool idea - no linux, no flasher nothing :-).

Tried :- failed

Again back to linux, followed the steps and works like a gem.

yankandpasteing the steps for my/others reference

Go to the N810 software download page.
Enter the serial number for a valid N810 device. To get one of these, pick any number between 001d6e9c0000 to 001d6e9cffff. Pick any random 4 digits (between 0-9 and a-f hex) as the last 4 digits.
Download the file named "RX-44_2008SE_1.2007.42-18_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin."
Download the latest firmware-upgrading software, "flasher-3.0".
Now that you have the firmware flasher and the 2008 N800 software update in the same directory, open up a terminal (on a Linux desktop/laptop), and type:
chmod a+x ./flasher-3.0
./flasher-3.0 -u -F RX-44_2008SE_1.2007.42-18_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin.
That will unpack the software, and it may take a few seconds. Once that is done, plug the N800 into your computer, using the included USB cable, then reboot the Nokia device while holding the home button. Now execute the following commands:
sudo ./flasher-3.0 --enable-rd-mode
sudo ./flasher-3.0 -k zImage -f
sudo ./flasher-3.0 -n initfs.jffs2 -f
sudo ./flasher-3.0 -r rootfs.jffs2 -f -R
That should be it. Your device should now boot up with the new 2008 version of the Nokia Maemo operating system.

Google Jumpstarts Handset Developers With $10 Million Challenge

If announcing the Android mobile handset open source software development kit (SDK) wasn’t enough for Google (www.google.com) today, the company is putting up $10 million in cash prize money for Android developers.

The Android Developer Challenge is designed to support the developer community and spark innovation on the Android open mobile platform, announced last week in conjunction with the Open Handset Alliance. Cash prizes from $25,000 to $275,000, with applications picked by a panel of judges. Submissions for the first round of Challenge I will be accepted from January 2 through March 3, 2008, with the 50 most promising entries recognized by the end of March. Each of the first round entry winners will receive $25,000 awards to fund further development.

Round two of Challenge I is more complicated. The 50 entries get to apply again by May 1, 2008, with the top 10 getting $275,000 each, and the next 10 receiving $100,000. Awards for round two of Challenge one will be done by the end of May 2008. A Challenge II will launch after the first handsets built on Android become available in the second half of 2008.

A panel of technology and mobile experts selected from the Open Handset Alliance member organizations and the industry in general will judge all qualifying entries. Awards will be given to the developers whose applications leverage all that the Android platform has to offer in order. Finally, developers retain all intellectual property and other rights to their applications, so even if they don’t win an award, they can still make some money from their work.

Google - It's Evil - with proof

yes, finally i am realizing the fact. I know there is lot questions why i think so ? or the best open source support company is that and you say its evil ?

lets looks on facts.

First of all, i accept its contributions to open source and i say its really valuable.

Now lets looks what google does,

First case : Google talk : yes its based on XMPP and the library they use (libjingle) is open source.

Fact : true but read the libjingle page :

"The current version of the libjingle code still uses the original internal protocol, which is slightly different from, and incompatible with, the Jingle specification. Nevertheless, it is close enough to Jingle that it is worthwhile learning the Jingle specifications. Similar "close but not identical" conditions exist for libjingle's audio content description (early version of Jingle Audio Content Description Format XEP-0167), ICE transport description (early version of Jingle Ice Transport XEP-0176), and raw UDP transport description (early version of Jingle Raw UDP transport description XEP-0177). Where this documentation refers to "Jingle" or one of its related extensions (in terms of how libjingle uses that protocol), it really refers to the original, internal protocol "

from http://code.google.com/apis/talk/libjingle/developer_guide.html

what this means ? The Old Microsoft evil : "Embrace, extend, and exterminate". Even google does not document their internal protocol. means giving free code is to spoil the standards and the whole work happened before.

accepting its evil ?

Second case : Look at the Android.

How many efforts on Linux mobile is existing ?
Please have a look :

http://tuxmobil.org/mobile_phone_linux_distributions.html
www.maemo.org
http://www.lipsforum.org/

Do we really need one more ?

This reminds me open source as APAC countries and the Non-open source as European and North American countries. In APAC, they fight each other always and they never think of a joint solution. They buy arms from the Eu and NA countries and spend the most part of their money which is supposed to be used for their development and finally make the EU and NA countries more rich. After effect :

The APAC are poor, undeveloped nations spending high on defense
EU and NA - Rich developed nations.

Google by applying the Evil factor it making the open source community more poor.

Do you now agree Google is Evil ?

A maemo answer for google phone wish list

1) First and foremost, I want an easy to use OS. Sorry, Symbian and Windows Mobile--though both these mobile OSes have plenty of power, they're not the easiest for the smartphone newbie to understand. Palm is a fine OS, but it's getting to be rather dated and sadly underpowered. Ideally, the Android platform will be as easy to use as OS X on the iPhone, but with a lot more flexibility.

Ans : Interface, GUI is not OS. maemo uses gnome mobile, Open source, themes supported.

Link : http://www.gnome.org/mobile/

2) Google has already come to my aid with the second feature I want--the ability to install and use a wide range of applications. I would be happy with the Google apps alone--I use GMail and Google Calendar religiously, and Google Docs would be great to have--but if Google truly believes in the open-source movement, they would open the doors for their competitors to enter the gate as well. This means I want to see apps from Yahoo and Microsoft on here along with all the other third-party ones.

Ans : Mozilla based web browser with flash and other support.

3) Following up on number 2, these are the applications I want on the phone: A fast and well-built browser that supports Flash as well as Java, a multiple IM client, an e-mail client that supports POP and IMAP, compatibility with Microsoft's Exchange server for work e-mail, and perhaps this is a pipe dream, but I want a VoIP client. Ideally, I'd like a mobile Skype app, as well as compatibility with something like T-Mobile's HotSpot @ Home, where I get to make free calls via WiFi.

Ans : garage.maemo.org - you will see more than 409 projects ( skype is already there )

4) It needs to be fast. That means I want 3G, and I want Wi-Fi as well (OK, so this is encroaching on hardware territory a bit). Thankfully, Qualcomm has mentioned that 3G will be a big part of Android, so this isn't too far from reality. That said, 3G and Wi-Fi together in one package would be ideal.

Ans : I don't know how many 3Gs are already deployed,
I don't understand why you need even 3G when WIMAX or 4G ( all ip based infrastructure) rolls out

5) Open up Bluetooth as much as possible. That means I want stereo Bluetooth as well as the ability to tether my PC to the phone via Bluetooth and use it as a modem. This combined with the phone's 3G abilities would obviate the need for a separate EV-DO or HSDPA PC card.

Ans : have a looks on

"7.4 Bluetooth
A high level API for Bluetooth is offered as part of the maemo connectivity subsystem.Using its D-BUS API a program can find remote Bluetooth devices such as phones, send files over OBEX object push and create pairings with remote devices. For thesetasks it’s recommended for application to use this framework as it not only has a lot simpler API but makes the applications look and behave consistently. For Bluetooth operations that aren’t supported by the maemo connectivity framework maemo includes a lower level BlueZ D-BUS API, which is also the main Bluetooth interface for all Linux systems. The BlueZ API has features for practically all aspects of Bluetooth systems, and as a consequence its a lot more complex than the higher level Maemo Connectivity subsystem’s offerings. The Maemo Connectivity Guide[41] describes the high level D-BUS API and its usage. More information about the BlueZ API can be found at BlueZ web site [3]. The maemo-example package also includes example code about both libraries.

The open-source Gold Rush

Let's tally up the list:

Zimbra - $350 million (on ~$10 million (guessing here, but guessing at the high end, I think) of trailing revenues) - September 2007
XenSource - $500 million (on $1 million in trailing revenues) - August 2007
JBoss - $350 million (on $27 million in 2006 revenues) - June 2006
Sleepycat - $35-50 million (on ~$7 million in trailing revenues, is my best guess) - February 2006
Gluecode - $10 million (on very little in trailing revenues, less than $1 million, I believe) - May 2005
SUSE - $210 million (can't remember revenues - I think $30-40 million) - November 2003
Ximian - ~$50 million (I can't remember - on $1 million or so in trailing revenues) - August 2003
What's the trend? Bigger. We are in the midst of a Gold Rush, as Dana Blankenhorn has written. The rules of software business are being rewritten, and those who understand them will make a lot of money for shareholders...and themselves.

While the early days of open source saw a few wild valuations (Ximian comes to mind, though I still think it was a good move by Novell, as it brought open-source DNA to the company), it's only recently that we've seen open source break $100 million valuations on very little revenue.

Clearly, the market feels like the best is yet to come.

And so it is. Now is a fantastic time to be involved in redefining the software industry to one that focuses on customers, not licenses. You should join.
