Google Gears Up To Take On Microsoft, Google Announcement Today

Google Gears up to take on the monolithic Microsoft this week. Google will announce the "Google Gears" initiative today that will expand its applications beyond that of the web and challenge Microsoft on its own property, the computer hard-drive. The mammoth internet company is launching Google Gears, an open-source technology for creating offline web applications.

A key differentiator of Microsoft applications is that they can be used without an internet connection. They are launched from the computer's hard drive and files created can be stored and accessed on that drive, reports The Financial Times Online.

Google Gears will enable its own applications to have Microsoft-like capabilities. What does that mean? Microsoft applications can be used without an internet connection and they are launched from the PC's hard drive and files created can be stored and accessed on that drive.

Case in First life for Second Life Poperty

A property case against Second Life publisher Linden Lab filed in a Pennsylvania court will not be dismissed, a judge ruled Wednesday, according to Valleywag.

The case, which was filed May 1, 2006 by Pennsylvania attorney MarkBragg, alleged that Linden Lab had illegitimately taken away the itemsin Bragg's account and banned him after he used a cheat to build up his in-world inventory of virtual items, in the process amassing severalthousand dollars' worth of assets.

Now, Valleywag reports, the court has denied LindenLab's request to dismiss the case, as well as its request to remove thecase to arbitration.

Many people are watching this case closely, because it represents thefirst virtual world property dispute to make it this far in a legalproceeding. If the eventual result is a ruling that Linden Lab has togive back the property, valued at around $8,000, it could have majorimplications for Linden Lab and makers of online games like World ofWarcraft and many others.

Tail Piece : Man never changes, he will cheat, sue etc for money in any life.

Linden Lab allows people to convert the Linden $ to real USD. So cheat and build at second life, convert money to real life or sue in real life( if caught )

Who is a Hindu?

Question revisited in the wake of Guruvayoor Controversy

Who is a Hindu, asked my friend, as we sipped our coffee watching a news story that said non-Hindus cannot enter Guruvayoor temple. While agreeing that it is the prerogative of the priest and the community to say that non-Hindus are not welcome, my friend insisted that I explain who is a Hindu.

Well, I could have put on the all-encompassing, secular garb and said all those who follow the Hindu way of life and added that more than a religion, it’s a culture. But I stopped short of it, as he explained the controversy that got the Guruvayoor head priest to reiterate the age-old stand.

For the uninitiated, Guruvayoor temple authorities performed purification rites last week saying that the temple was defiled by the entry of Ravi Krishna, son of Central Minister and a senior politician from the state, Vayalar Ravi, for the first-feeding ceremony of his son. We know that Ravi Krishna’s mother is a Christian, Mercy Ravi, who too is a senior politician from the State. But, as many of us have understood from newspaper reports—well, the first round of that was seven years ago, when the purification was carried out after Ravi Krishna’s wedding—, he was neither baptized nor brought up the Christian way. A practicing (for whatever that means) Hindu, married to a Hindu, at Guruvayoor temple, that too with the blessings of SNDP (the organization set up by Sree Narayana Guru, a social reformer who is considered to be the spiritual leader of Ezhavas—a backward caste to which Ravis belong, SNDP has the de-facto authority in some parts of the State to formalize weddings among the members of ezhava community), Ravi Krishna has nothing but his mother’s religion against his claims and rights as a Hindu

But then, except for the Nairs in Kerala, for all other communities, including the Ezhavas, the inheritance is patrilineal. Children inherit the caste from their father. And then, Ravi Krishna is an ezhava, a Hindu. My friend asks, so who decides who is a Hindu? And based on what?

And I pause. What was this way-of-life thing about? Is there some way of induction like baptism or circumcision to Hinduism? Is it something that comes as a birth right? If yes is it matrilineal or patrilineal? Who takes the call? Would the high priests please clarify these before they once again parrot the non-Hindus cannot enter the temples line?

Communications

"Yank (copy in VI ) and Paste", Did u ever asked a non unix person to read it ?

Last day i did it and found "copy in 6" . I never expected that from my wife where i was showing her the latest and greatest blog ever made.

This is the way communications happens. Intended to say something but some other things 'll be heard. So what we can do to avoid it ?

say like a you are explaining to a kid and let then say back they understood / can repeat what u said ( not yank and paste ). Understand and repeat back in their words.

more communication theories ? : http://www.mindtools.com/page8.html

tail piece : Finally I educated her about vi showing vi in Linux and she got much impressed of open office ( till that time she was saying open office is not user friendly )

Second life and social networking

Was trying www.secondlife.com for last couple of days. Its a nice, to get more stable environment. I can understand a 565 messages system will take time to mature ( think the 5 message system such as SIP is still maturing after 10 years as emerging/cutting edge technology).

I was very impressed with the server clustering they had but not satisfied with the client because it goes crash or not responsive lot times.Still i tried for a couple of days.

Opinion :

Nice for bloggers to exaggerate the world they see. its good for business man to do business. finally i got the question

What is for the user ?

A second life to explore ?

I believe its boring till you make a social life in second life. May be its a nice idea to link the orcut kind of environment with second life. I can sit with my friends at places where like our old school or our village talking each other realizing the things we cant do now.

Yep : Miles to go before i sleep ....

A crash free second life and social network.I don't know when i 'll get time to sleep in my first life.

Joke:

Q) when dinosaurs lived ?
Answer : between 10 and 11 years before

Theory : Sip is emerging technology and H323 is pre-Jurassic technology. sip came 10 yrs back and H323 11 years back, so dinosaurs lived between 10 and 11 years before ( this is as per sip experts ).

SIP : session initiation protocol.

Reflections

There are some people to whom I cannot say No. And, there are a few things that are too tempting to refuse. Unni is one of those people. And, an invitation to write, one of those things. So, here I'm, writing for YankandPaste.

Now the big question comes, on what? Politics and social issues? Unni jumps in to say, hey, no agenda in the writings, please. He doesn't want this blog to be coloured in any hues of red, he says. I don't like saffron, I retort. Then, he comes back...who is talking about saffron? Let's do the VIBGYOR magic, we decide. The rainbow blog. After all, we are all chasing the rainbow.

Feel free to share your thoughts, your views on the posts. We may not necessarily agree on everything, but we can always agree to disagree and yes, I think, that is the spirit we all share.

So here you go: Reflections!

happy reading :)

Your Baby on 5-Month-Old: Week 4

Baby sleep: The Sears method

How your baby's growing

Your baby now sees and hears the world almost as well as you do. Her communication skills are expanding rapidly, too, as evidenced by her squeals, bubbling sounds, and operatic octave changes. Her sounds can demonstrate her attitude or response to objects — such as happiness, eagerness, or even satisfaction — with a problem well solved.

At this age, about half of babies babble, repeating one syllable — such as "ba," "ma," "ga," or other consonant-vowel combinations — over and over. A few will even add another syllable or two, making their sounds more complex.

You can encourage your baby by babbling right back at her and by making a game of it ("The sheep says, 'baaa,'" or "The goat says, 'maaa'"). Or, when you hear a syllable you can't identify, just respond enthusiastically with, "Yes, that is a car! See how shiny the red paint is?" Your baby will appreciate your encouraging her by keeping the conversation going.

Dedicated to my ex: roommate

Tonight I Can Write
by Pablo Neruda, translated by W.S. Merwin
Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

Write, for example, 'The night is starry
and the stars are blue and shiver in the distance.'

The night wind revolves in the sky and sings.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too.

Through nights like this one I held her in my arms.
I kissed her again and again under the endless sky.

She loved me, sometimes I loved her too.
How could one not have loved her great still eyes.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
To think that I do not have her. To feel that I have lost her.

To hear the immense night, still more immense without her.
And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture.

What does it matter that my love could not keep her.
The night is starry and she is not with me.

This is all. In the distance someone is singing. In the distance.
My soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

My sight tries to find her as though to bring her closer.
My heart looks for her, and she is not with me.

The same night whitening the same trees.
We, of that time, are no longer the same.

I no longer love her, that's certain, but how I loved her.
My voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing.

Another's. She will be another's. As she was before my kisses.
Her voice, her bright body. Her infinite eyes.

I no longer love her, that's certain, but maybe I love her.
Love is so short, forgetting is so long.

Because through nights like this one I held her in my arms
my soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer
and these the last verses that I write for her.
-----------------------------------------------------
The above poem is dedicated to my ex roommate who used to sing this poem at mid nights and interrupt our sleep ( atlast i found that i can even sleep hearing this )

Pinmozhikal: Collection of comments left at every Malayalam Blog by their readers. Contains a blog roll too.

Kerala Blog Roll: A mixed list of Malayalam and English blogs

Tapioca: Search for Malayalam keyword. Google search with Mozhi input is another option.
The following description on reading and writing is for Windows Internet-Explorer users. Linux users please visit Peringodan's blog. Firefox users please visit Ralminov's blog, Evuraan's article and Batherian's tip.

How to Read

Download the latest unicode font AnjaliOldLipi and save in Windows Font folder.
Restart the Computer. In Internet Explorer go to Tools, Internet Options, Fonts, Select Malayalam from the pull down menu and select AnjaliOldLipi as the font.
In fact, any Malayalam unicode font including the default font Kartika, shipped with the Windows should do the trick. However, Kartika being the modern lipi, most people prefer AnjaliOldLipi.

How to Write
Go to Start, Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, Languages (tab) and select Install files for complex script and .....

Visit any blog site ( Blogger or blogspot.com or worldpress.com etc etc )and start your own blog.
Choose any of the four options mentioned below for text input.
a) Use Mozhi Keymap
Using Mozhi Keymap for Malayalam writing is the easiest way. After downloading and installing, you will see a diamond on the right hand bottom side (taskbar) of the desktop. Click on it and click on the Malayalam letter 'ka'. The diamond will change to 'ka'. From now on anything you type on the computer will be in Malayalam.

Tip: Use Notepad for typing and save text as UTF-8 document. Copy paste the text into blogger window. This is faster and safer than direct input.

b) Use Varamozhi
Another option is to use Varamozhi for writing. Download and follow the instructions. Don't forget to use the Export to Unicode option.
c) Use Varamozhi Online or Ilamozhi
Use Varamozhi Online by Peringodan or Ilamozhi by Deign if you have restrictions in downloading software to your computer.

d) Use Inscript Keyboard
Above three options use the technique of transliteration, that is, malayalam letters being generated from combinations of English letters. This means, one has to learn English letters first to type in Malayalam letters. In inscript keyboard, each Malayalam letter gets a key assigned in the keaboard. Visit Ralminov's blog for details.

Help

Tips on setting your blog. Read Adithyan's suggestions too.

Problems? Read FAQ 1, FAQ 2, Wakari's instructions in Malayalam

Here is a quick reference to help you with the letters. You will also need this help to write Koottaksharams.

Advanced setup such as font embedding can be found in Ralminov's blog.
How to Get Listed
Readers come to know about the existence of your blog and publication of new entries in your blog by visiting the several blog rolls mentioned in the Where to Find section.
If your blog has enough Malayalam content it will automatically get listed in the Thanimalayalam blog aggregator and Google's blog search. However, it might take a few days for Google and therefore Thanimalayalam aggregator to find your blog after you publish it for the first time. You can expedite this process by submitting your blog here.
To get listed in the Chintha.com blog roll send an email to malayalam blog aggregator AT chintha dotcom
To get listed in the Kerala blog roll visit this site http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~mp/contact.shtml

To get listed in the blogroll maintained by Sreejith send an email to sreejithk2000ATgmailDOTcom

To participate in the comment aggregation program Pinmozhikal, set the comment send address in your blog as pimozhikalATgmailDotcom

What Else?
Blog Responsibly: Blogging provides one of the freest medium of expressions. However, the blog service providers and the blog rolls are bound by the rules of the countries they operate in. In addition, blog rolls are hosted by individuals and they might have their own conditions for a blog to be listed . For example, here is a link to the terms and conditions for pinmozhikal and thanimalayalam blog aggregator.
Protect Your Privacy: Identity theft is billions of dollars worth illegal activity. You can reduce the chances of getting victimized by withholding your private data such as name, address and birth date from your blog and comments.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to Solve the Font Issue

For some of the readers, the chillu letters will appear as letter+chandrakkala, instead of the proper chillu. If this happens,
Make sure that you deleted any old AnjaliOldLipi font from the Windows font folder and installed the latest one.
If step 1 did not solve the problem, it could be because you have an older version of usp10.dll file in the Windows/System32 folder. Download and unzip this file. Eventhough, this is an exe file you can unzip it. You will find a usp10.cab file. Unzip that too to get the usp10.dll file. Remember the location you saved it.
Download and run this program. You will be asked the location of the new usp10.dll file.
After installation cancel the Windows warning and choose to keep the new file.
Restart the computer.
If everything went alright, you should be able to read the proper chillu in the sentence below. Else, you might still have an older version of usp10.dll somewhere in your computer. Do a search for usp10.dll and check the version of the other files (right click, properties, version). It should be 1.47 or later. If not, at this point, just replacing all of them with the new version and restarting might work. Please read the comments below. If nothing works...
