Divide and Rule - Part 1

Divide and rule is a combination of political, military and economic strategy of gaining and maintaining power by breaking up larger concentrations of power into chunks that individually have less power than the one implementing the strategy. In reality, it often refers to a strategy where small power groups are prevented from linking up and becoming more powerful, since it is difficult to break up existing power structures.

The typical elements of this technique are said to involve

  • creating or encouraging divisions among the subjects in order to forestall alliances that could challenge the sovereign.
  • aiding and promoting those who are willing to cooperate with the sovereign.
  • fostering distrust and enmity between local rulers.
  • encouraging frivolous expenditures that leave little money for political and military ends.
It is said that the British used the strategy to gain control of the large territory of India by keeping its people divided along lines of religion, language, or caste, taking control of petty princely states in India piecemeal.

In 1835, Thomas Macaulay articulated the goals of British colonial imperialism most clearly:"I have traveled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace the old and ancient education system, her culture, because if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native self-culture and they will become what we want them to be, a truly dominated nation."

The strategy was succinctly put: "We must do our best to form a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern, a class of persons Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, words and intellect." As the architect of Colonial Britain's Educational Policy in India, Thomas Macaulay was to set the tone for what educated Indians were going to learn about themselves, their civilization, and their view of Britain and the world around them. An arch-racist, Thomas Macaulay had nothing but scornful disdain for Indian history and civilization. In his infamous minute of 1835, he wrote that he had "never found one among them (speaking of Orientalists, an opposing political faction) who could deny that a single shelf of a good European library was worth the whole native literature of India and Arabia". "It is, no exaggeration to say, that all the historical information which has been collected from all the books written in Sanskrit language is less valuable than what may be found in the most paltry abridgments used at preparatory schools in England

Time to buy a Apple tv ?

Was wondering, Is it time to buy Apple TV ?

$2.99 for old movies and $3.99 for new movies.

k let me calculate :

Cost of Apple Tv : $299
Cost of internet : $50 / month
Cost of movie : $15 /month

How much I pay with netflix and i am sure they have good movie collection.

K fine, I understood its high tech, so comes with a cost ( mostly hidden) once i combine more services the cost will be less ). Do i have any other use with Apple Tv ? as a gaming console or so ?

noo, So i cant use.

May be i expect Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo to do movie online business or netflix to start online movie business with one of these people so that i can use my gaming box for movie also, I love to buy one on those than Apple tv or Apple should come up with a gaming console.

bhool bhulaiyaa -- movie review

Was watching bhool bulaya ( a movie from priaydarsan : http://www.bhoolbhulaiyaa.com/ ). This is the second remake of manichitrathazu, i am watching.

The first remake i saw was the Rajni movie ChandraMukhi. While watching Chandramukhi, i was watching it as a Rajni film and not as a manichirathazu remake.

While watching the bhool bhulaiyaa, I realized the depth of characters, visuals, songs in Malayalam. Bhool bhulaiyaaA worst remake i ever saw - may be second because first i will say virasath - thavar magan.

But if i watch it as a Hindi movie, i think its an OK movie. Its actually a good movie compared to Hindi standards. Vidya Balan looks far better than the Tamil remake Jothika ( her actions were like comedy ).

Verdict : A good hindi movie but the Malayalam version is far far far superior to all the other remakes.

I really suggest the Hindi viewers to watch the complete Malayalam movie or even some strips ( available in you tube ).

Every body is behind social networks as of now. Building open standards for social networking (or proclaim so).

The latest from google. As orcut is famous only in Brazil and India, they are funding another project to replace orcut.

Driving ... a looking back

Was remembering, the first days of driving in Vancouver. As the background, i was relocated from India to Canada 2 years back.

In India, we have right hand drive and Canada is a left hand drive.

The laws ??

Yep we don't bother much about it in India ( true freedom ) but Canada ? Its tickets and insurance hike.

Looking back some moments the blunders i did on road ( failed 3 time in road test to get a pass ).

Instructor said take left and i did through a no entry. We need no care on left turn when we drive right hand side. Same i did with right hand side also ( did too much care).

Another one : Her question " do u know what is this sign" pointing to a sign board. I said " stop sign" . She replied " ohh , sorry , i thought you don't know that, already three passed".

Second test : more care full, so drive on 30 all way( me intelligent ). Max is 50 then no problem, she said " queue on your back ".

sharing the links which helps to get license :

The below gives road sense tips:

( very nice video interactive tutor in skills )

Tailpiece : wondering how may i drive, if i go back to India - No, I don't drive

Sad part : I had 10+ yrs driving exp in India, but didn't get any concession because of the system difference.

Life's Little Instruction Book

---courtesy: Ram---

Have a firm handshake.
Look people in the eye.
Sing in the shower.
Own a great stereo system.

If in a fight, hit first and hit hard.
Keep secrets.
Never give up on anybody; miracles happen everyday.
Always accept an outstretched hand.

Be brave. Even if you're not, pretend to be; no one can tell the difference.
Avoid sarcastic remarks.
Choose your life's mate carefully. From this one decision will come 90 per cent of all your happiness or misery.

Make it a habit to do nice things for people who will never find out.
Lend only those books you never care to see again.
Never deprive someone of hope it might be all that they have.
When playing games with children, let them win.
Give people a second chance, but not a third.

Be romantic.
Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.
Loosen up. Relax. Except for rare life-and-death matters, nothing is as important as it first seems.

Be a good loser.
Be a good winner.
Think twice before burdening a friend with a secret.
When someone hugs you, let them be the first to let go.

Keep it simple. Be modest. A lot was accomplished before you were born.
Beware of the person who has nothing to lose.
Don't burn bridges. You'll be surprised how many times you have to cross the same river.
Live your life so that your epitaph could read, "No Regrets".

Be bold and courageous. When you look back on life, you'll regret the things you didn't do more than the one's you did.
Never waste an opportunity to tell someone you love them.
Remember no one makes it alone. Have a grateful heart and be quick to acknowledge those who helped you.
Take charge of your attitude. Don't let someone else choose it foryou.

Visit friends and relatives when they are in hospital; you need only stay a few minutes.
Begin each day with some of your favorite music.
Once in a while, take the scenic route.
Send a lot of Valentine cards. Sign them, 'Someone who thinks you're terrific.'

Answer the phone with enthusiasm and energy in your voice.
Keep a note pad and pencil on your bed-side table,
Million-dollar ideas sometimes strike at 3 a.m.
Show respect for everyone who works for a living, regardless of how trivial their job.

Send your loved ones flowers. Think of a reason later.
Make someone's day by paying the toll for the person in the car behind you.
Become someone's hero.
Marry only for love.

Count your blessings.
Compliment the meal when you're a guest in someone's home.
Wave at the children on a school bus.
Remember that 80 per cent of the success in any job is based on our ability to deal with people.

Don't expect life to be fair.
